I’ve been using Upside for a long time and have earned about $30–$40 in cash back. Most of the gas stations that qualify are 7-Eleven, but I feel their gas is lower quality and doesn’t last as long. That makes me question if the savings are worth it. If you drive often for work and need higher-quality fuel, the small cash back might not balance out the difference.

I started using Upside about a month ago and have saved around $50 so far. It’s one of the easiest money-saving apps I’ve tried. For gas, I just select an offer in the app and check in when filling up. It asks for the last few digits of my credit card. The rewards change depending on the station and time, and I have 4 hours to use the selected offer. My boyfriend also started using it, but he noticed an increase in spam calls, so I suspect they sell user data. Still, that seems common with most apps. The app isn’t just for gas. I’ve also seen offers for groceries and restaurants. It usually takes a few days for offers to be reviewed and accepted, and about a day to receive the reward. I prefer redeeming gift cards instead of sending money to my bank, since I don’t want my banking details connected. The downside is that the app isn’t available everywhere. For example, in New Jersey I couldn’t find any gas station offers, only a few restaurants. Also, the 4-hour redemption window doesn’t work for everyone’s schedule, especially in bigger cities. Another limit is that the deals are often small, like 3 cents per gallon, and some stations cap it at 2 uses per day. That means for most people, it adds up to maybe a dollar a day at best. Costco isn’t included either, at least in my area. Overall, I find it useful for saving small amounts, especially since I drive a lot. But it won’t make a big difference for the average user.
